But don’t worry. As a constant traveler who has guided countless friends through their first LA adventure, I have perfected a plan.

How Your Day in LA Should Look Like

This plan clusters attractions geographically. This minimizes your time stuck in traffic. It maximizes your time enjoying the city.

Morning on the Coast: Sun, Sand, and Santa Monica Sights (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM)

We will start our day with that classic California vibe.

Head west to the coast before the city fully wakes up. An early start helps you beat the worst of the traffic. It also makes parking much easier. This is the best way to begin your perfect 24 hours in Los Angeles.

Our first stop is the world-famous Santa Monica Pier. You will instantly recognize its iconic Ferris wheel over the Pacific Ocean.

Walk the wooden planks. Enjoy the carnival games and the lively atmosphere. This historic pier is also the official end of the legendary Route 66.

For parking, aim for the beach-level lots. Lot 1 North (at 1550 Appian Way) is your best bet for convenience.

Rates change with the season, but the location is unbeatable. The pier itself is open from 6 AM to 10 PM, giving you plenty of flexibility.

From the pier, it’s an easy and scenic trip south to Venice Beach. You can take a leisurely 30-minute walk along the Ocean Front Walk.

Or you can rent a bike or scooter for a quicker ride. This is a classic LA experience you won’t want to miss.

Venice Beach is a spectacle of humanity. The boardwalk is famous for its quirky energy. You will see talented street performers, unique vendors, and bodybuilders at Muscle Beach.

Next, we head to the heart of Tinseltown. Our goal is to conquer one of the world’s most famous sidewalks. This is a core part of any visit for a first-timer.

Let’s be real for a moment. The Hollywood Walk of Fame can be crowded, chaotic, and a bit gritty. Some locals even advise skipping it entirely.

But for your first trip, let’s approach it with a smart strategy to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Park your car once and explore on foot. The best place to park is the underground structure at the Ovation Hollywood shopping complex (formerly Hollywood & Highland). From here, you are right in the middle of the action.

Focus your attention on the stretch of Hollywood Boulevard near the TCL Chinese Theatre.

This is where you will find the most famous celebrity handprints and footprints in the forecourt. It’s a tradition that dates back to the 1920s.

As you walk, look down at the more than 2,700 terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalk.

If you want to find a specific celebrity, you can use the Star Search tool on the official Walk of Fame website before you go. This area is one of the most popular LA attractions, so just embrace the energy.

Here’s a tip: for a great view of the Hollywood Sign, head up the escalators in the Ovation Hollywood complex. The viewing platforms on the upper levels offer a clear, if distant, photo opportunity. It’s an efficient way to check another must-see off your list.

We have saved the best for last.

As the sun begins to set, we will drive up into the Hollywood Hills. Our final destination offers the most breathtaking view in all of Los Angeles.

The Griffith Observatory is an LA icon for a reason. Perched on the south-facing slope of Mount Hollywood, it offers stunning panoramic views.

You will see the Downtown LA skyline, the glittering city lights, and another perfect view of the Hollywood Sign.

Now for the crucial logistics: parking. Admission to the Observatory building is always free, which is amazing.

Parking, however, requires a plan. The lot at the top is paid and fills up very quickly, especially around sunset.

You can park for free at the lower lots near the Greek Theatre and enjoy a scenic 15-20 minute walk up the hill. But you must check the Greek Theatre’s concert schedule online first.

On concert nights, this area is closed to public parking. Also, remember the Observatory building is closed on Mondays.

There are also incredible shows in the Samuel Oschin Planetarium for a small fee!
